Separate three different kinds of backup.
A spare camera protects against equipment failure. A data-backup workflow protects captured files. A backup photographer addresses a different failure: the primary photographer cannot cover the event.
Couples are routinely advised to ask photographers how they handle unforeseen circumstances, including illness, backup equipment, and post-production protection. A credible answer needs more than “I know someone.” It needs a current route, clear limits, and a handoff that another person can follow.
The 60-second test
- Can you name the first person you would contact?
- Do you know which dates, locations, and types of coverage are realistically within their range?
- Is there a second route if the first person is unavailable?
- Can your coordinator locate the current event handoff without opening your private inbox?
If any answer is unclear, the route is not ready yet. Record one owner and one date for the next verification.
